Either way, the N.F.L., which runs the Super Bowl with an iron hand and brutal efficiency, is not used to random events during games, which are tightly scripted for television networks and the hundreds of millions of viewers at home. Two years ago, hundreds of fans were denied entry to the game in Arlington, Texas, because temporary stands were not safe. Weather has been unpredictable over the years, but rarely are games delayed for anything more than the occasional hiccup. Michael Burns, a spokesman for Entergy Services, the local utility, said that his company’s distribution and transmission feeders that serve the Superdome were never interrupted. Power did not go out elsewhere in the city. CBS, which broadcast the game, said in a statement that it had “lost numerous cameras and some audio powered by sources in the Superdome.” The network switched to backup power and remained on the air. CBS said it would honor all its commercial commitments. What do you think of all this excitement during the super bowl? If you were one of the several people sitting in the dark for a half hour? With no power you probably couldn't get any concession at the concession stands because it take power to cook the food and run the cash registers.

power outage during super bowl
It was not New Orleans’s brightest moment. About 90 seconds into the second half of Sunday’s Super Bowl, the lights on one half of the Superdome’s roof suddenly went out. Internet connections in the press box were cut, and the scoreboards went dark. The roughly 35-minute power failure, which came just moments after the Ravens’ Jacoby Jones returned the second-half kickoff 108 yards for a touchdown, was one of the oddest moments in Super Bowl history. N.F.L. wanted to signal that the city was back in business after Hurricane Katrina in 2005. The Superdome, which was turned into an emergency shelter after the storm, had been overhauled and rebranded through to a sponsorship deal with Mercedes-Benz. The blackout is certain to add to the legend of the Superdome. Some New Orleans residents believe the building is cursed because it was built near the old Girod Street Cemetery, which had fallen into disrepair. Some Saints fans believe this is why their team was unsuccessful for so long.

If I was those people sitting in the stands I probably would have freaked out. I think some nerd hacked into the system and thought it would be funny to cut the power. Its rare to see the power go out. I have watched lots of games and never seen anything like it. If I was in the dark I would get very mad very fast. All the drunks were probably freaking out wanting to see the game.
ReplyDeleteThis was not the best thing that could have happened. You could tell the players did not like the delay of game. As they were all sitting there stretching. I thought it would have been a good idea for everybody to get their cell phones out and turn on the flashlight app. That app is very bright, it could have brightened up the stadium in a hurry. That was just my suggestion.
ReplyDeleteI think it was a once in a life time thing that was someone who had hacked into the system and shut down the power. I probably would have just sat there and try to stay calm. I heard there was a man stuck in an elevator for the entire time of the power outage and if i were him i would have freaked out. Hopefully it wont happen again and next superbowl will be better.
ReplyDeleteI think that this was a very weird thing with today's technology! Also if I were the ravens I would have been very mad! A lot of the reason would be that football has a lot of momentum in it and after the kickoff return they had it all and a big lead. But in the end the ravens did end up winning.. Otherwise I think this whole ordeal would have been a judge problem!
ReplyDeleteI think that it was all a big misunderstanding. I think personally that the town was probably told not to over excessively use their electicity, somebody just thought they'd bluff it off, and poof... power went out. I think that had I been a player of the 49'ers, I would have been jumping for joy, cause if any of you watched the game, they needed some time to regroup. Had I been a player of the Ravens, I would have been pretty upset. You have a great lead, you're doing great, and then the power goes out, and the 49'ers start to make this triumphant comeback. I think that had the 49'ers won though, there would have been extreme controversy about it. I think every Ravens fan, coach, player, owner, etc. would have fussed about the power outage causing a misfocus of the game.
ReplyDeleteI think that someone turned it off. It is not often the power goes out at a big place like that without a reason. I t would have been very weird to have that happen. People probably couldn't get anything to eat or drink. A lot of people probably got mad because they couldn't see the game.
ReplyDeleteI think someone sabotaged the Super Bowl. Lights in big places don't just go off whenever they feel like. I would have to agree with Tractor on the concept that a lot of people would have been pretty angry with the delay of the game and the tedious process of getting concessions in the dark.
