Female Prison Population Changes Drastically

Women in prisons make up seven percent. In 2000 the African-Americans were six times more than the number of white women. In 2009 the percentages dramatically dropped fifty-three percent for African-Americans and even dropped seventeen percent for Hispanics. African Americans were previously being incarcerated for charges such as drug offenses and violent crimes, now the white population in prisons are mainly made up of the drug offenses and violent crimes. In the 1990's the total population of prisons could rise twelve percent in one year on average. Now it has dropped down to only rising three percent in a year.
I think this amazing! I was reading this and my jaw dropped to the floor. I think we are moving in the right direction. I also think it has to do with the people who truly need help being able to get help. When I think of people going to prison three reasons stand out in my mind: money, possession and addiction. Now that the African-Americans have dropped in their percentage as the main leader in drug offenses and violent crimes it takes so much crime away. With the violent crimes in my opinion are started over possessing something another individual wants such as guns, money, social status. With all the percentages dropping of the crimes it shows how we are becoming a better society. What are your thoughts on the article? If you would like to read the article click here .
