Train kills boy on tracks in Bernalillo

http://www.krqe.com/dpp/news/crime/train-kills-boy-on-tracks-in-bernalillo

A 15-year-old boy was walking while listening to his music with headphones on Wednesday afternoon around 3:15. He didn’t see or hear the train coming then the train hit the boy and killed him. A witness told the police that he heard the train whistle three times then he looked over and saw a shoe fly from the track and book bag and books were also scattered around the scene. The name of the boy has not yet been released. The train spokesperson said that the speed limit is 79 mph where the accident happened. There were 116 passengers and crew members on the train, but nobody was injured.

I think this is very sad. I feel so sorry for the family. I also feel sorry for the person who was driving the train because they will never forget this or ever be able to forgive themselves. Maybe if he wouldn't have had his headphones, he would still be alive today but nobody will ever know now. It is terrible that the boy never got to live his life to the fullest. Through personal experience with something like this it is very hard to get over, and I am happy that the experience I went through didn't involve death. If I was ever in this situation I don't know what I would do. I would be terrible. Could you imagine someone in our grade getting hit and killed by a train, it seems unbelievable to me!

How do you feel about this accident? What would you do if you were in this case?

  1. Oh my goodness that is so awful! Imagine how the witness feels- he's probably traumatized for life! So I'm assuming the boy was walking on the tracks then before he was hit? That is such a tragedy. :(

  2. I can't imagine what it would be like to the be the driver of the train. This is a very horrible situation. I feel very bad for the people that were in the situation. I think it is weird that the boy didn't look for a train before he went of the tracks though. You would think he would be smarter about that. In the end, it costed his life. It is so sad that he had his headphones on, and didn't even hear the train.

  3. I couldn't imagine the pain this family is going through. If I was put in this situation, there would be no way for me to explain how I would react. Have any of you seen the movie Fried Green Tomatoes? This situation slightly reminds me of it. A young boy, probably about the age of 15 too, is walking across a bridge, when suddenly, a gust of wind blows his hat off. His hat lands right on the tracks. The boy gets off of the bridge and goes down to the tracks, retrieving his hat. The wind keeps blowing it farther down the tracks, so he keeps going, finally reaching it. He has a hold of it, but now his boot gets caught in the track railings. Then, there's smoke coming from afar, and a train is approaching. The boy can't get his shoe out, and sadly, the train takes his life.
Right after I read this blog post, I immediately thought of this. It's terrible. What are your opinions on handling the situation?

  4. As much of a tragedy as this sounds like, I highly doubt that he couldn't hear the train through his headphones. And even if he couldn't, why would anyone walk along train tracks wearing something where they couldn't hear what was going on?
