I recently read an article about the Education Department demanding that schools make some changes to allow all the disabled athletes or those wanting to be in sports, but don't have the option, to participate. Whether that's having a separate team for them or having specialized events for them. Some worries are that some schools don't have the money to change their ways in order for this to happen.
The new order from the Education Department says athletics is also a civil right for the disabled and schools that don't protect it could lose federal funding. Under the rule, schools must change the traditional sport so that it gives the disabled kids a chance, but doesn't actually change the sport or gives others an advantage. If these aren't achievable, then schools may have to open a sports program that is open to disabled students. If there aren't enough students, schools should try to make district wide, regional, or mixed gender programs.
In my opinion if the Educational Department is pushing to have this done, then they should at least give out funding for it, or at least to the school who can't afford it. Otherwise I don't think it's very possible to get it all done. What do you think would be the best possible way to get all the schools to be able to achieve the goal of having a disabled sports program available? Should there be funding to all schools, or just the ones who aren't financially stable?

I agree that they should make an attempt at this. I think they should just let them participate in the sports anyways and they should be supported to go out for these types of sports. I don't know how they would make it a district wide thing though because some people will think that it is holding other kids back when they have to play a sport with a disabled kid. I'm just saying that if this happens that is great and it's great that they are at least attempting to get them involved.
ReplyDeleteI think all disabled children should get the opportunity to be able to play sports. I don't however think schools should lose funding for not offering them. The sport should not have to be changed for two or three disabled kids.
