Consequences of Sleep Deprivation for Teenagers
I recently read an article called Consequences of Sleep Deprivation for Teenagers. This article is about how teenagers don't get their full night of sleep each night. This means that it impacts on school performance, attention, memory, and not getting your full night of sleep has been identified as a cause of weight gain in children. The study that was led by Professor Olds (University of South Australia) of more than four thousand children nine through eighteen is the first large-scale study of sleep habits. They found out that underweight teenagers had the most sleep, while overweight teenagers had the least sleep. The underweight teenagers didn't have that much more sleep than the overweight teenagers. The overweight teenagers had an average of twenty minutes less sleep than underweight teenagers during the week and that extend to an hour less on the weekends. Olds said, "It seems very likely that it's the slow sleep duration that's contributing to obesity, probably through various hormonal mechanisms that we know are associated with sleep deprivation." The National Sleep Foundation says that teenagers should be getting around 9-9.5 hours of sleep but many don't. Teenagers undergo changes in their life, such as, their mood changes, growth spurts and changes to their sleep patterns. Teenagers may sleep all day or find it difficult to get up in the morning, but when adolescence kicks in the natural circadian rhythm is changed with the consequences that it can be difficult to get to sleep. I think it's a good thing to get 9-9.5 hours of sleep every night. I usually get almost nine hours of sleep every night. Do you think sleep is important to teenagers? How many hours if sleep do you usually get?

I find it hard to believe that just because someone gets 20 minutes less sleep a night means they are more likely to be overwieght. I think that there are many more reasons then just sleep deprivation. I think that most of the kids that get less sleep are playing video games or watching t.v. and if anything that would contribute more to being overweight because they are probably just sitting there eating chips and drinking pop. I myself usually get somewhere around 7 hours of sleep and I would agree that it affects your preformance in school cause I have fallen asleep in class a couple of times and missed out on the notes. (don't worry Mrs. Spettman, I have my nap in before your class so I am wide awake by then).
ReplyDeleteI think it is extremely important for kids, especially teenagers, to get enough sleep. Teenagers are still learning and growing, and sleep is very important to energize the body. I get 8-9 hours of sleep a night, but I would LOVE to have more! When they don't get the proper amount of sleep they need, I think they are more likely to eat junk food to try to get energy to make up for the lack of sleep.
ReplyDeleteI disagree with the obesity part but I think it is important that you plenty of sleep. I usually get about 8 hours of sleep. Maybe the school she just start at like 10 then we could all sleep in and have plenty of sleep.
ReplyDeleteI do think it is very important to get enough sleep. Or at least 8 hours. I sometimes only get 6 or less. Just depends on whether I can fall asleep or not. Otherwise I usually get 7 or 8. On the weekends I sleep as much as I can, even taking naps!
ReplyDeleteI also think its very important to get upwards of 9 hours of sleep every night. Most nights I only get 6-7 and I am extremely tired during the middle of the day.
ReplyDeleteI think it is very important to get 8+ hours of sleep. Usually i try to get more because on nights when i get 8 or less I get drowsy around mid-afternoon, much like Ethan Tremblay. I usually get around 8, but last night i had the luxury of getting 13 because i went to bed at 6. It was AMAZING!
ReplyDeleteI think it is very important to get eight or more hours of sleep but I usually get six to seven. Sometimes even less than that. I think that my sleeping schedule is so messed up on the weekends that it carries over to my week. On the weekends sometimes Im up all night then I sleep the whole day. Or sometimes I go to bed late and get up early receiving less than 6 hours of sleep a night. I have noticed that on days when I get a good amount of sleep the night before I do better in school that day and I pay attention better.
ReplyDeleteI have had nights were I have had so much to do and suffer the consequences the next day being so tired. I love when I can get 10 hours of sleep. It jus feels so refreshing and easier to wake up. I don't know if it has so much relation to obesity but I think it has atleast something to do with stress and relaxing. It is true though that we do our best when we get plenty of sleep the night before.
ReplyDeleteI don't think the lack of sleep is what causes obesity, but maybe the reasons people don't sleep or what they eat to stay energized after having not enough sleep. I usually get around 7 hours of sleep, sometimes less, and it really shows in school because I have troubles with paying attention or even staying awake.
