I recently read an article online about a young girl who had a very serious condition when she was younger. Today, Cameron Mott lives a very normal life just like any other 6-year-old. When Cameron was just three years old, she started having seizures and was first diagnosed with cortical dysplasia. She would wake up early in the morning just like any other kid, but soon her first seizure would hit her, and she would lose consciousness and fall to the floor in an instant. Cameron soon had to wear a protective helmet everywhere she went, because there was a major possibility of head trauma when she would collapse.
A few months later, doctors diagnosed her with Rasmussen's syndrome. It is a disorder where your body deteriorates and attacks its own brain cells. The doctors said they would have to put Cameron into a surgery called hemispherectomy, a surgery that would remove half of her brain. The surgery left Cameron with hemiplegia, making her partially paralyzed, in Cameron's case, on her entire left side of her body. Cameron immediately went into therapy, and she recovered in just four weeks. Cameron has not had a seizure since the surgery to this day.
I really enjoyed reading about this article. I didn't even know that a person could survive without half of their brain. It really was a miracle for Cameron, especially because she had the surgery done on her when she was so young. I'm so glad the surgery went well, and I'm glad Cameron is perfectly healthy and back to her normal self.
I've never heard of such a condition like this before. I also didn't know someone could live without half of their brain. I wonder how long the surgery must have taken. I bet her parents must have been really worried with what the outcome would have been.

ReplyDeleteIs she perfectly fine with half a brain? I would be scared to have random seizures. My dog used to have seizures before he died, and they were really scarey to watch. I'm glad she's okay now.
ReplyDeleteI didn't know someone could live with only half of their brain. I've never seen someone have a seizure before, but I think it would be scary. I've never heard of this surgery before and I wouldn't want to go through this.
