Train kills boy on tracks in Bernalillo

http://www.krqe.com/dpp/news/crime/train-kills-boy-on-tracks-in-bernalillo

A 15-year-old boy was walking while listening to his music with headphones on Wednesday afternoon around 3:15. He didn’t see or hear the train coming then the train hit the boy and killed him. A witness told the police that he heard the train whistle three times then he looked over and saw a shoe fly from the track and book bag and books were also scattered around the scene. The name of the boy has not yet been released. The train spokesperson said that the speed limit is 79 mph where the accident happened. There were 116 passengers and crew members on the train, but nobody was injured.

I think this is very sad. I feel so sorry for the family. I also feel sorry for the person who was driving the train because they will never forget this or ever be able to forgive themselves. Maybe if he wouldn't have had his headphones, he would still be alive today but nobody will ever know now. It is terrible that the boy never got to live his life to the fullest. Through personal experience with something like this it is very hard to get over, and I am happy that the experience I went through didn't involve death. If I was ever in this situation I don't know what I would do. I would be terrible. Could you imagine someone in our grade getting hit and killed by a train, it seems unbelievable to me!

How do you feel about this accident? What would you do if you were in this case?

Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone

I just finished reading the first book of the Harry Potter series. This book is about Harry growing up in the muggle world because his parents were killed when he was a baby. He lives with his aunt and uncle until he gets a letter that says he's been accepted into the school of Hogwarts for wizards and witches. He meets Hagrid, who shows him around and gets him ready to go to school in the fall.
When he gets to Hogwarts he makes friends right away, Ron Weasley and Hermione Granger. He also makes enemys like Draco Malfoy and Professor Snape. Harry finds out a very important thing is being gaurded in the school and that someone is trying to steal it. He puts all the puzzle pieces together and you'll have to read the book to find out what happens.
I have already seen all the movies so at first I couldn't really get into the book because I either knew what was going to happen or I pictured the movie in my head. I forgot what happened in the end so I ended up reading about a fourth of the book in a day. It's a really good book so I encourage people to read it. Especially if you're into magic and that kind of thing. My favorite part was when the three kids have to get through all the different rooms to reach the end and see a surprise waiting for them. If you've read this book please share your thoughts.
I recently read the Shadow's Edge it's a book about wonder and also wired things above all other books.  The chapters are being on one subject than go onto another subject it could be confusing to some people. While you read this book you might feel the emotions of the characters of this book through out the book.  My question is would you read the Night Angel Trilogy? Would you be interested about people killing their families for power or killing a queen cause your best friend should be king of a country. In my opinion this book is exciting than other books in our school library. A assassin's name Kylar Starn killed Hu Gibbet the mentor of Vi Sovari.

Correctionville, IA celebrates beginning for new grocery store

I RECENTLY SAW AN ARTICLE ON KTIV.COM THAT CORRECTIONVILLE'S WAIT FOR A GROCERY IS OVER.

You might not think of the supermarket as a big deal. But after losing their only grocery store to a fire more than three years ago Correctionville residents had to learn to do without. Normally, when you're in the grocery store, you probably don't like to wait. But after those years passed by without a local grocery store Correctionville residents were actually excited to wait for this moment. A lot of people drove to Sioux City to get groceries, which is a long way.
After the groundbreaking in April, the store came together quickly. The owners estimate hundreds of volunteers donated thousands of hours to create the new building. Customers agree one of the best features of the new 6,000 square foot facility is the produce section. It's about four times larger than the old one used to be. Now, people will have the chance to get that, and her groceries, seven days a week. The new grocery store created about a dozen new jobs in the community. After cutting the ribbon, the owners, Mark and Dawn McCrea, honored the old landowners, by making them their honorary first customers!

What do you think of the new Grocery store in Correctionville.... I think it'd would be a very nice thing to have in a town.

7 Year old Handcuffed Over $5

By Ben Waldron
ABC News Blog

Frances Mendez sues NYPD and the city for $250 million for handcuffing her seven year old son and interrogating him for almost ten hours. Apparently her son, William Reyes, got in fight over five dollars for lunch. I'll bet there's more to this story than $5. There are a lot of very mean kids ... even in kindergarten. All you have to do is meet the parents to see why the kids behave the way they do - good or bad.It really stupefies me... to all the posters on here saying it is the fault of the police and authority that this child is an undisciplined bully who has taken to committing crimes at the age of 7:Real criminals develop from children just like this one. They learn to deny responsibility, to create a scene over their wrong doing and to whine and cry like babies to give the air of innocence, or repentance. All the while just scheming to get out of punishment for their wrong doings. The fact that the NYPD already dropped the robbery charge based on this kid's accomplice's false statement that he picked up the money not Reyes, shows this child and his parents that there are no consequences to wrong and even violent acts against others.
If the other boy's mother knew she has the right to file charges on her own accord and insist this be investigated fully, this would be a different story. But heaven forbid we should look at what is happening and actually take appropriate actions to stifle the development of a future life long career criminal. Want more details? South Dakota House passes bill allowing school districts to ARM TEACHERS!

This bill will allow the teachers of South Dakota to be armed with a firearm.  It was passed on Tuesday, January 29 of 2013 by the South Dakota House.  Representatives voted 42-17 to send the measure to the Senate for further debate.  This all was passed because in rural areas there is no policemen stationed in the school or school area.  So South Dakota decided to arm the teachers, administrators, and/or volunteers so that they can protect the students and themselves in case of a attacker.

Now this, honestly scares me.  So lets give a story to say why this does.  So,  Test day all the students are in class and the teacher is getting ready to give out the test.  When all the kids start to screw around.  The teacher tells them to stop but she just has no control.  Then two boys/girls get into a huge fight.  Punching, kicking and blood.  One of them knows the teacher has a gun in her/his desk. So the kid runs, grabs the gun and boom, shoot the other kid in the leg.  Huge panic fills the room.  Everything is out of control.

Yeah so that is why this scares me.  I know what you are thinking.  When will that ever happen.  Well trust me when I say, anything can happen in school.  So don't tell me that will never happen.

My second worry, I should say is training the teachers to use these firearms.  Its not a game when you press a button and it will shoot for you.  You have to have aim,  a good grip, and to know how to change the clip.  Where would these teachers train?  they cant just go out and shoot the gun, you might hit someone and there isn't a building in every town where you can shoot guns at targets.  And plus if they start training with guns, they will be tired for school or not have grades turned in.

Even though I'm stating a lot of negatives there are some positives to this.  For one there will be more protection in the schools and that will mean less deaths.  It will also help if there was a hostage situation.  Because  the teachers could come up with a plan to stop the bad guys.

Overall I think it is a bad ideal, but that is just my opinion.  I would like to hear your comments down below and see what you guys think about this.  Let me help you by giving you some questions.  First,  do you like this law or not?  Two,  if you like it why?  Three, if you don't like it why?

President Questions Safety of Football

President Barack Obama said in an interview that if he had a son he would have to think long and hard about letting him play football. There is too much risk to play the game now especially at the young age and in college because they have nothing to fall back on. The players in the NFL are a different case because they are in a union and paid millions of dollars.
"You read some of these stores about college players who undergo some of these same problems with concussions and so forth and then have nothing to fall back on. That's something I'd like to see the NCAA think about." - President Obama

Like any sport as the game develops, so do the players and now a days the players are all bigger, faster and stronger then what they were when football first began. They are also paid a lot more money which is why they take the risk for the damage they do to their bodies. They all want to put up the big hit... as does Bernard Pollard (in the above picture) and he has knocked out several players in his time in the NFL. He alone says the NFL won't exist in 30 years because if they continue to take away parts of the game, fans are going to lose interest in the game. Obama says football fans will have to wrestle the fact that change will be coming and they will have to accept the fact that the changes make it a safer game for the players, even though it will make it "less exciting". Personally, I like watching the big hits.

I do agree though that something needs to be done because so many people end up with brain trauma after they quit playing and wind up committing suicide. Some of the things the NFL wants to do is take away helmets and take off shoulder pads but in my mind that is too far, and I wouldn't want to watch it let alone play. All athletes take the risk of participating in a sport for the love of the game, let the players play. What do you think? Would you still watch it if they did that?

Living With Half of her Brain

I recently read an article online about a young girl who had a very serious condition when she was younger.  Today, Cameron Mott lives a very normal life just like any other 6-year-old.  When Cameron was just three years old, she started having seizures and was first diagnosed with cortical dysplasia.  She would wake up early in the morning just like any other kid, but soon her first seizure would hit her, and she would lose consciousness and fall to the floor in an instant.  Cameron soon had to wear a protective helmet everywhere she went, because there was a major possibility of head trauma when she would collapse.

A few months later, doctors diagnosed her with Rasmussen's syndrome.  It is a disorder where your body deteriorates and attacks its own brain cells.  The doctors said they would have to put Cameron into a surgery called hemispherectomy, a surgery that would remove half of her brain.  The surgery left Cameron with hemiplegia, making her partially paralyzed, in Cameron's case, on her entire left side of her body.  Cameron immediately went into therapy, and she recovered in just four weeks.  Cameron has not had a seizure since the surgery to this day.

I really enjoyed reading about this article.  I didn't even know that a person could survive without half of their brain.  It really was a miracle for Cameron, especially because she had the surgery done on her when she was so young.  I'm so glad the surgery went well, and I'm glad Cameron is perfectly healthy and back to her normal self.

The Last Days of Marilyn Monroe

I am currently reading the book The Last Days of Marilyn Monroe. The main topic about this novel is basically facts that lead to almost prove that Monroe was murdered, not suicidal. The author spent many hours finding many people connected to the Monroe mystery. He then put those interviews into the story. He basically has all these facts and then places them together and fills in the spaces with what most people believe to have happened on the night of August, 1962. The book goes through all the main people that were close to Norma Jeane and her childhood. Her childhood suprised me a little bit because believe it or not it was not great at all. She was passed around from orphanage to orphanage and never reslly had a stable home. The Kennedys also had a major role in Monroe's  life. As you read the story you will soon sed how close the Kennedys and Monroe really were. Personally, I think that Marilyn was murdered because of all the facts that I have read so far lead me to think that. So far I am really enjoying this book becuase I like to learn about past events that I didn't get to experience firsthand. The novel is sort of a longer one, so to speak. But I think that it is time well spent on my part. So the main thing I have to ask you before you run out and go buy this book is... do you think that Marilyn Monroe was murdered? Why or why not?

Harry Potter

I have read the first six books in the Harry Potter series by JK Rowling, and am currently reading the seventh and last one. I never really knew what they were about, or how good they were until I actually started reading them. They are about the life of a boy who knew nothing about his past, and then was suddenly thrown into the wizarding world. Each one of the books is about a new year of school at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. Harry has two best friends, Ron Weasly and Hermione Granger, who accompany him on all of his exciting escapades in the magic world. Just like anyone, Harry comes face to face with some troubles, his mostly including Dark Magic and Lord Voldermort.
These are honestly some of the best books I have ever read! I got them all for Christmas, and am almost done with the last one because I just can't put them down! I would highly recommend them to anyone who might want to read them. For those of you who have read them, what do you think of them? Do you love them as much as I do?!

Disabled Students Must Be Given Sports

I recently read an article about the Education Department demanding that schools make some changes to allow all the disabled athletes or those wanting to be in sports, but don't have the option, to participate. Whether that's having a separate team for them or having specialized events for them. Some worries are that some schools don't have the money to change their ways in order for this to happen.

The new order from the Education Department says athletics is also a civil right for the disabled and schools that don't protect it could lose federal funding. Under the rule, schools must change the traditional sport so that it gives the disabled kids a chance, but doesn't actually change the sport or gives others an advantage. If these aren't achievable, then schools may have to open a sports program that is open to disabled students. If there aren't enough students, schools should try to make district wide, regional, or mixed gender programs.

In my opinion if the Educational Department is pushing to have this done, then they should at least give out funding for it, or at least to the school who can't afford it. Otherwise I don't think it's very possible to get it all done. What do you think would be the best possible way to get all the schools to be able to achieve the goal of having a disabled sports program available? Should there be funding to all schools, or just the ones who aren't financially stable?

Brooke Greenberg

I recently read the article called Scientists Work to Unravel Mystery Behind Woman Who Doesn’t Grow written by Peter Murray.  It is about a woman whose name is Brooke Greenberg.  Brooke is a twenty year old woman that hasn’t aged a bit sense she was five years old.  For the last fifteen years, Brooke has been the same size.  All the doctors are mystified and can’t even begin to explain what is happening to her.  There is a group of scientists working to figure out the mystery of Brooke’s aging disorder, or the reason why she is already a twenty year old that has the physical and mental appearance of a toddler.  As far as all the doctors and scientist looking into Brooke’s condition, Brooke is the only person in the world that has this condition.

In Brooke’s early life, there were many complications.  She had to go through many different medical emergencies.  Before she was even six years old, she had several surgeries for seven perforated stomach ulcers.  Also, she suffered a brain seizure.  That brain seizure caused her to have a stroke, but there were no lasting effects.  When she was four years old, she fell into a coma for fourteen days.  The doctors found that it was caused by a brain tumor, but by the time she woke up the tumor had disappeared.
I find Brooke’s condition unbelievable.  I really wonder what it is like for her parents. I can’t even imagine what it would be like to have a twenty year old daughter that is still a toddler!

Subway is Sued for Short Footlong Sandwiches

Subway is being sued for "short selling everyone of their footlong sandwich".
Two New Jersey men are suing Subway because their footlongs are not actualy a foot long. They filed on Tuesday in Superior Court in Mount Holly. This suit is possibley the first legal filing against Subway shops after a photo went viral. Someone posted a picture of a footlong sandwich lined up with a ruler on Subways Facebook page. The picture showed that the sandwich was not a footlong as advertised on television. When the suit was filed, "the company issued a statement  saying that the sandwich length can vary a bit when franchises do not bake to the exact corporate standards."
Stephen DeNittis, the lawyer for the case, said he is preparing to file a similar suit in Pennsylvania state court in Philadelphia. He said he's had sandwiches from 17 different shops, and everyone has failed to meet a foot long. "The case is about holding companies to deliver what they've promised." Stephen said. Even though the bread is short of a half-inch, it adds up, said Stephen.
Subway has 38,000 shops around the world, and its 5$ footlong specials have been around in the company's ads for five years. DeNittis said both clients, John Farley, of Evesham and Charles Noah Pendrack, came to him after reading last week about the short sandwiches. DeNittis is asking for compensatory damages for his client and a change in Subway's practices. The Milford firm conclued that Subway should either make sure its sandwiches measure a full foot or stop advertising them as such.
I don't think suiing is the way to go, but this article really shows how people will believe anything the media tells us. I mean, have any of you ever questioned if a footlong was really a foot? Not me, I just assumed it was.

Manti Te'o

I recently read an article on ESPN.com about the hoax that involved the star linebacker.

The lady that was supposed to be Manti's girlfriend claim to have died on the same date as his grandmother did, so he couldn't go to the funeral. This was a huge story and it made Manti become a fan favorite. But now the allegations are saying he knew about the hoax heres the story:
Multiple media outlets have found numerous instances of the Notre Dame linebacker talking about Lennay Kekua as if she had existed after December 6, the date that he and the university say he found out that the girl he thought he was having a relationship with and who died of leukemia was made up.
Te'o told Notre Dame officials that he received a phone call, while in attendance at an ESPN awards show in Orlando, from a number he recognized as having been that he associated with Kekua. The woman on the line during that phone call told Te'o she had had to fake her own death in order to elude drug dealers. The woman then tried to restart her relationship with Te'o.
"I think I'll never forget the time when I found out that, you know, my girlfriend passed away and the first person to run to my aid was my defensive coordinator, Coach Diaco, and you know he said something very profound to me," Te'o said. "He said, 'This is where your faith is tested.' Right after that, I ran into the players' lounge and I got on the phone with my parents and I opened my eyes and my head coach was sitting right there. And so, you know, there are a hundred-plus people on our team and the defensive coordinator and our head coach took time to just go get one. You know I think that was the most meaningful to me."
I tink it's a very sad story and I hope that everyone doesn't take it all out on him, but it's also not right if he did know about the hoax. What do you guys think?

Spotlight falling on South Dakota Wrestler

During the past 27 years of having Madison Square Garden Night, no one has seen anything like what was witnessed during the 160-pound match on Friday night between Madison High School's Michael McComish and Chamberlain's Thomas Swanson. During the first period, after the wrestlers were declared out of bounds, the athletes went back to the center circle in the Madison Middle School Gym.  McComish had just taken the down position and a split second later, the spotlight came crashing down on the Madison senior. "I have never seen anything like this at all, and I have attended all of these matches," said former Madison coach Dale Waba, who was also announcing for the MSG event. "I can't imagine what could have caused this to happen." On Monday, Athletic Director Bud Postma said that the rope holding the spotlight broke, but he declined further comment, as did Coach Chris Waba. When the spotlight fell, McComish's opponent and the referee instantly jumped back.  Jared Barger, who was in the stands, quickly came to the mat and helped the referee pull the light off McComish, who was then attended by meet officials and Lynn Landeen, a local nurse who was present. After his injuries were bandaged, McComish walked out to be treated at the local hospital. Heather Bergheim, McComish's mother, said that he was back in school doing what all senior boys are supposed to be doing. "We are very thankful it was not more serious," she said. "We are hoping for the best and taking it just one day at a time."On Monday afternoon, McComish told The Daily Leader that he had 15 to 20 stitches on his forehead and the back of his head.  He said that the rope broke and he heard the chains rattle, then he thought, "What the heck happened?"He estimated that the fixture weighed around 100 pounds. While many rumors had indicated McComish sustained burns from the spotlight, he said that he was not burned, but "it was warm underneath there."McComish has been a devoted wrestler since sixth grade and had to miss wrestling at the Kingsbury Tournament on Saturday, his mother said. However, he was there supporting the Bulldogs."I talked to him on Saturday at Arlington," Dale Waba said. "He did not have any bad burns, he told me."The halogen lights in the spotlight had recently been replaced, producing much less heat. After the accident, officials spent some time cleaning up the mat and then wrestling continued, but without the spotlight which typically highlights Madison Square Garden Night. So what if this would of happened to you would you wrestler again or would you be done wrestling? I would keep wrestling because it was a freak deal.

Katie Beers'

In 1993 Katie Beers' was kidnapped and trapped for 17 days. Now she has published a book about her horrific life and kidnapping.
Katie was kidnapped at the age of 9. After she had been kidnapped she was locked in a dungeon for 17 days only living off of junk food. She had known that this dungeon existed because she used to play in it with her brother and friends as a child. The dungeon was in a house with a concrete block as the door and covered with a rug. Katie had gotten the idea that she was going to be kidnapped because she was being asked if she wanted to go to the store to get a toy or get candy by a man named John.
Also prior to this she was being abused verbally, physically, mentally, and sexually by her godmother, mother, and godfather. She loved going to school because she could get away from all that but she would only go to school about twice a week if she was lucky. She had never realised how bad her life was until after everything had happened.
Katie had been rescued and after that she was adopted into a foster home and got a boyfriend got married and has 2 kids now. The book is called "Buried Memories."

WAL-MART TO HIRE VETS

Reading the Sioux City journal on Wednesday, January 16, /D1, an article caught my eye.  The world's largest retailer and private employer with 1.4 million workers announced they plan to help jumpstart the U.S. economy.

Walmart plans are to hire 100,000 veterans over the next five years.  They also plan on spending $50 billion to buy more products made in the U.S.  Walmart has had a bad reputation for who they hire and the low-pay they give the employees.

Do you feel Walmart will actually do this?  Are they just trying to get you in the door? What are your thoughts?

Consequences of Sleep Deprivation for Teenagers

I recently read an article called Consequences of Sleep Deprivation for Teenagers. This article is about how teenagers don't get their full night of sleep each night. This means that it impacts on school performance, attention, memory, and not getting your full night of sleep has been identified as a cause of weight gain in children. The study that was led by Professor Olds (University of South Australia) of more than four thousand children nine through eighteen is the first large-scale study of sleep habits. They found out that underweight teenagers had the most sleep, while overweight teenagers had the least sleep. The underweight teenagers didn't have that much more sleep than the overweight teenagers. The overweight teenagers had an average of twenty minutes less sleep than underweight teenagers during the week and that extend to an hour less on the weekends. Olds said, "It seems very likely that it's the slow sleep duration that's contributing to obesity, probably through various hormonal mechanisms that we know are associated with sleep deprivation." The National Sleep Foundation says that teenagers should be getting around 9-9.5 hours of sleep but many don't. Teenagers undergo changes in their life, such as, their mood changes, growth spurts and changes to their sleep patterns. Teenagers may sleep all day or find it difficult to get up in the morning, but when adolescence kicks in the natural circadian rhythm is changed with the consequences that it can be difficult to get to sleep. I think it's a good thing to get 9-9.5 hours of sleep every night. I usually get almost nine hours of sleep every night. Do you think sleep is important to teenagers? How many hours if sleep do you usually get?

#CutForBieber

Earlier this week, the pop sensation singer, Justin Bieber, was caught photographed with marijuana or some other kind of drug.  Many fans have started to react to the pictures causing up rages throughout the country.  Bieber was also photographed drinking.  He is a Canadian citizen, so he can drink in his home country, because the drinking age is lower, but was photographed in California. After the pictures were seen online, a site called 4Chan started a 'hoax' about what to do to get Bieber's attention.

The anonymous writer posted "Tweet a bunch of pics of people cutting themselves and claim we did it because Bieber was smoking weed.. See if we can get some little girls to cut themselves".  After word spread, the Twitter and Facebook world became involved, and the hashtag #cutforbieber started trending all over.  Pictures of girls cutting themselves until Justin would stop using drugs surfaced. Many of the pictures surfacing on Twitter and Facebook were of fake or old pictures, but captions on the pictures read something like "We'll stop cutting when you stop doing drugs" or "It hurt so bad, but I did it for Justin".

I think the whole situation is terrible. I don't understand why someone would joke about cutting themselves, because a lot of people are dealing with self harm. Maybe new pictures didn't surface online, but I'm sure there are at least a few fans that had cut themselves after they heard of the situation. 4Chan was also part of the same trending hashtag that surfaces last fall, in an attempt to get girls to shave their heads because Bieber had 'cancer'. What do you guys think of the situation?

Gunman wounds man at St. Louis school

On Tuesday, January 15, a former part-time student at Stevens Institute of Business and Arts shot a man in the chest before shooting himself. They believe that his intents appeared to be targeted because he came in searching for the man. Although, this event cause a chaotic scene with the students in a frenzy to find protection from the horrifying sounds that they must have heard in the building. The police quickly found both bodies and rushed to a hospital where a doctor says they should both make a full recovery but specific details were not released to the public. To read the entire article click here.  I think that this situation is very scary and it would be terrifying to hear gunshots outside of my classroom. I personally think that something should be done about the safety of all of our school in America because situations like this one have been happening way too often across the country. I know that if I had a child in school I would want something done about the situation. I understand that it would be hard to control, but I think it is necessary to take some safety precautions for our children.

Early Kidnapping and Murder

On Jan. 3 in Early, Iowa a farmer, Gary Schramm had pulled over expecting to help a car that had slid into the ditch but, was not expecting to find a woman being kidnapped and a criminal that had ran as soon as he approached the vehicle.
The criminal was Kirk Levlin and the woman was Jessica Vega. Levlin had just gotten out of jail in Wisconsin before coming back to Early were his mother, Marilyn Schmitt, lived. Levin came back to Early and killed his mother with a belt and a knife, Schmitt was choked and stabbed.
After Levlin killed his mom he went to Storm Lake to "meet" up with an old friend, Vega. Vega was surprised to see Levlin after so many years. Levlin asked Vega if she could give him a ride home because his car had broke down, Vega agreed to give him a ride. Levlin lead Vega to a old barn and had told her that he wanted to show her something so Vega said he had to make it quick because she had to get to work. Levlin took her in the barn and tied her up with a rope and told her he was kidnapping her. After Levlin tied her up he threw her in the car and took off. This is where they went in the ditch.
Vega was saved by Schramm and Levlin was found in a barn where he was arrested for murder and kidnapping. He was also planning on raping Vega but slid into the ditch before anything could happen.

Legendary Giant Squid

        *Not actual photo

After years of expeditions up to 3,000 ft underwater Japanese scientist finally capture the first ever Giant Squid. Oh and in its natural habitat. They spent 400 hours in the abyss ( not actually 400 hours, they just added it up) anyways they also did more than a hundred scuba dives. Although it was just a baby it's about as long as a bus. They said that they were originally doing the footage for Discovery Channels upcoming episode of the Curiosity series. Well good for you Discovery Channel. Interesting stuff. Yes, interesting stuff. Well if you want to read the story I would click here. Wait! The people who wrote the real story was ABC News. Okay, now you can click "here".
