“Paradise” by Kaitlyn Stone
The poem being analyzed is by Kaitlyn Stone and is called “Paradise.” This poem is about the serenity and over-all calm, relaxing feeling of the beach - total paradise.
The author wants you to be enticed by her description of this beach, wants to make you feel like you are actually there. She wants you to envision yourself sitting on this beach at sunset while all of your worries melt away. I chose to analyze this poem because I am tired of the cold, dreary weather we have been having and just wanted to imagine myself at a nice, sunny beach! And that is exactly what this poem did!
Kaitlyn chose to write this poem in free-verse, not quite any rhyme or reason to the structure of it. She uses all sorts of figurative language in “Paradise.” “The sunset on the horizon is like a painting,” Stone uses a simile here to compare the beach’s sunset to a painting. There is also personification used in this poem. “The ocean water kisses my feet.” “The shoreline stretches far and wide.” The ocean can’t really kiss, and the shoreline doesn’t actually stretch, but Kaitlyn uses these personifications to give you a better mental image of the beach. “Paradise” is a very short poem, the purpose of it being to cheer you up and make you feel like you’re at the beach. Stone did a very good job creating a mental image of this beach in your head. She makes you want to be there.
